Kiritza of Birzoieni

A play by Vasile Alecsandri.

This is definitely the first Romanian post-communist musical. I must say that, in Romania, musicals are far from a consecrated genre. It was quite a tour de force to do the music (together with Gelu Ionescu) and also play my part – an amiable Irish drunk, accidentally settled in Romania and hired to teach English to a spoiled brat. There were times when I was at the theater fourteen hours a day. Sometimes the way to building a show is so difficult that on the night of the premiere you just feel drained; but after the first round of applause, all the troubles seem to melt away. It’s the magic of theater. And it keeps you going.
